The Group B category was conceived in the late 70s to enable the same production-based cars to race in both sports car races and rally events. By the early 80s, they had become the Godzilla of the rally scene - 600 hp AWD turbocharged monsters that could cover rally stages faster than anything ever seen.
In 1986, the door was slammed shut on the F1 cars of mountain and forest roads. Faster cars combined with crazier crowds meant the Group B rocket ships were just "too fast to race."
